I think this car is too far gone to save. I'm afraid it will turn into a huge money pit. The body is solid with next to no rust and the interior is mint but the underside is too fucking rusty for my taste. I think I'm gonna replace the gas tank since I already bought it and sell the damn thing. It's disappointing but the last thing I want to do is invest money into a car that I will never recover. I try to find a better one to start with the next time.

Your thoughts?

Here's the thing about this hobby, you will never, ever get back what you put into it. Ask anyone that ever built a hot rod.

Is it actually rot, or is it surface?

all that's just surface rust. My torino looks a little of the same underside

I find this quite reassuring in comparison to my FTO...there are rustier cars out there still on the road!

I can't see any holes. #this actually looks like it would respond well to sand/soda/ice/enter material here blasting, as in have it blasted, give it a lick of paint and it might look factory fresh.

From the pictures it looks like surface rust which could be cleaned up with some elbow grease, but you're the one who has been under the car so you know what the story is better than I do. There is no use doing a project that you're not really in to.

It looks like mostly surface rust there is no holes anywhere. Except the rear bumper mounts those are rotted.

That's the thing I was never really making a hot rod out of it. I just wanted to fix it up a bit drive it for a while and sell it for at least what I put into it.

Yes if I had the equipment to lift the body off of the frame I could do a good job cleaning it up but in my simple garage that's not quite possible.

That's completely saveable then, as long as you are willing to spend some time sanding and grinding. Clean it up, then undercoat it, and it should be good as new.

Currently at a similar crossroads with a car in my life (money pit, not rust, per se).

I think you're early on enough where cutting your losses won't be something you regret.

My brother had a project $500 '77 Benz he loved, but it was a long long long process. Once things continued to break down after having been restored, he gave up and bought an immaculate, garaged Roadrunner for 4k.

Sorry.. Me-me-me-me...

Time I have a lot of, its money that I'm short on. I think I'm gonna keep going with it for now and hope I made the right choice.

I have a new gas tank, rear springs, rear shocks, rear bushing kit on the way that should arrive next week. The front is no where near as bad as the back. It seems most the the rust is behind the back doors. I'll eventually crawl under there with a wire wheel and go to town.

I don't know the car is pretty solid. I might keep going with it. I'll clean up the rust and give it a splash of black paint and it might be ok.

All the cars we have atm are starting to look like that. I'd probably do the same as Peter suggested, sand them down and recoat.

I feel like cleaning up the cars at home now.

Ignore what everyone else said. I totally think you should sell it. It hopeless, completely hopeless. I wouldn't even bother trying. Hell, don't even think about it anymore.

Just throw the new parts in the trunk and I'll buy it for what you have in it and covering shipping to the states.

Seriously though, you could fix that pretty easily.

Wirewheel the rust off and spray some rust converter paint on it and forget about it.

You had me going the for a sec then I was like "waaaaiiitt a minute! I see what you did there" I think I will continue on with the project. I've never had a 35 year old car before so I did not know exactly what I was getting into but it appears this is pretty much the norm of what you will find.

Yeah I'm in Alberta where they use sand & gravel instead of salt. If this was in my homeland of New-Brunswick the car would of snapped in two already.

I'm going to be the un-Oppo voice of reason and say if money is a concern, which you said it was, pass. No project is as cheap as one hopes when they start it. and missing out on a project hurts less than getting invested in a project and being unable to complete it.

Kinja'd!!! lone_liberal > Luc - The Acadian Oppo
01/24/2015 at 17:59

Great! Obviously all of the rubber bushings and probably the shocks will need to be replaced but some surface rust never hurt anybody.

Kinja'd!!! Luc - The Acadian Oppo > lone_liberal
01/24/2015 at 18:02

yeah I already have the bushings shocks and springs on order from summit racing I should get those next week.

Kinja'd!!! Luc - The Acadian Oppo > JasonStern911
01/24/2015 at 18:08

Kinja'd!!!0

Money is not necessarily a concern I just don't want to invest 5k in a car that will only be worth 3K when done. But I'm ok investing 3K if it will be worth 3K. I'm not looking to make money but I'm not looking to loose it either.

really other than the rust which I have been assured isn't that bad. Shocks, springs, bushings, exhaust and this car will be a strong runner.

Mechanically nothing appear to need repair except the suspension is very tired. I could probably do without the springs but since I'm at it why not change them too since they are not that expensive.

Shocks and Bushings are the only things that really need attention.

I'm with everyone else here. That doesn't look too bad. It's going to be alot of work, but it's going to be your work, so it will mean so much more once it's done. That all looks like pretty minor surface rust on thick steel to me and nothing that spending the time to grind it out won't fix. Cost will basically be replacement bolts from the hardware store, wd-40, grinding wheels, wire-brushes, sandpaper, and rustoleum.

Kinja'd!!! Luc - The Acadian Oppo > SidewaysOnDirt still misses Bowie

Yeah I've already decided to keep going with it. I never worked on a 35 year old car before so I did not know how bad was bad. so I will clean it up and paint and it will be great. New gas tank showed up to day and new suspension parts should be here next week.

I know it's been answered, but I'm going to throw my $0.02 in anyway.

Kinja'd!!!

This rust is bad and needs replacing. There's no saving the part if it looks like that, there's no metal there. Your pictures look like surface rust. Surface rust is fixable.
